This is one of my first stories I've ever written that I got more than a paragraph on before giving up, so it might not be great. Also, I think it could do with a better title, but this was the best I could think of.
So here's Chapter One.
The Loxodontas and Aneijas in…
The Great Journey
CHAPTER 1
THE LETTER
The dragon flapped its wings as it swooped through the air. It twisted and swirled as it dived in and out of the soft white clouds. It turned on its back and flew upside-down, satisfied with the effortlessness of its flight. A large flat cloud was just below, and the dragon turned its gentle glide into a nosedive, plummeting into the whiteness. It came out of the other side, only slightly dampened by its swim. It looked around, the ground was now visible: endless expanses of green fields, trimmed with a yellow beach and then pure blue. On the horizon, the sun was starting to set, casting bright oranges and golds where the sky met the land. The dragon could hear birds singing, and tilted its head in confusion. The birds it knew didn’t sing while in flight, and it was high above the ground. The scene faded as the birdsong grew louder and louder…

Kelius the Lizardus woke with a start. He yawned widely. His head turned and he gazed sadly at the pathetic excuses for wings positioned on his back. Wings like those would never lift so much as a Dino hatchling, never mind an Ancient Water Lizardus. They flapped feebly as he imagined what it would be like to live his dream, just once.
His bed was a pile of straw and leaves, and his bedroom was an offset tunnel from his cave-house. From the next tunnel along, he heard purrs and small growls that told him that his adoptive Felidragon sister, Nikita, was beginning to awake. He stretched and stood up, his heavy tail knocking against the wall. Rustling sounds from the other tunnels told him that his ‘family’ were getting up. Kelius left his room and walked to the spare tunnel that they used as storage. It was split into two sections: a larger one for food and a smaller one for the other possessions that the group owned. He grabbed some food in his mouth and left the storage tunnel, just in time to see Lilani, his adoptive niece (or granddaughter, depending on which way you looked at it) streak outside in a flash of blue fur.
“Lil!” he shouted, “Where do you think you’re going?”
The young Furdragon stopped in her tracks and tried to look innocent. “I was just going to see Em.”
Emani was Lil’s twin sister, and she lived in the cave next door. “Not until you’ve had breakfast.” Said Kelius firmly, setting the food down on the floor. That was when something shiny caught his eye. Temporarily forgetting Lilani, he wandered over to the cave entrance. A gold envelope was lying on the floor by one of the two large rocks that helped to form the strange shape of the cave entrance. (Their human, Elpunt, said it looked like an earth creature – an ellfant?) Had he known what glitter was, he would have said that the envelope appeared to be covered in the stuff. “What’s this?” he wondered aloud, before picking it up delicately. He lumbered slowly back inside, to see that Nikita and Caeli had also got up and were starting to eat. Lilani was gulping her food down as fast as she could, in her excitement to leave and see her sister. Caeli raised a paw and batted her magenta mane away from her eyes. She was pinker than a regular Air Furdragon, but she was still slightly loopy. Becoming mother to twins Em and Lil had calmed her slightly, but not by much.
Kelius sat down next to Nikita, his fellow Ancient in the group. She was a pretty brown Earth Felidragon, but she didn’t get on well with the rest of the family. He passed her a smile which she didn’t return. A sharp claw sliced open the top of the envelope and drew out the letter inside. It was on a piece of pale gold card, with a patterned border. He unfolded it and started to read.
Dear Kelius, head of Loxodonta clan.
I am writing to request that you and the other receivers of this message come to Sunset Clifftop at three o’clock this afternoon. It is a matter of utmost importance. This message has also been sent to: Reptan, head of Aneija clan; Dracobreeder, human of Aneija clan; Elpuntthing, human of Loxodonta clan. Please be at the meeting place organised on time.
Yours sincerely,
The Dragon Guardian
Kelius let out a gasp of shock. The Dragon Guardian? Writing to him? The Dragon Guardian was famous for his amazing powers. In times of need, he would travel to the human land and hypnotise humans into coming into the Rift, halfway between Earth and the Dragon World. There he would explain the situation to the human, and try to convince them to become a Dragon Adopter. That was where Kelius had come from. His human, Elpunt, lived in the human world, but often came to visit.
Kelius heard a gasp from his side. Nikita had been reading over his shoulder.
“The Guardian? What’s he writing to you for?” there was a tone of resentment in her voice.
Kelius shrugged. “I don’t know,” he admitted, “but I’ll talk to Elpunt.”
Dragons like Kelius could communicate telepathically with their Adopters.
“Elpunt!” Kelius called out in his mind.
“Hey, Kelius,” came the reply.
“Did you get that letter?” he asked, straight away.
“The gold one?”
“Yes, the gold one. Read it yet?”
“Of course. Clan? What does he think we are, some tribal ritual thing? We’re a family, for goodness’ sake.” Elpunt said, irritation in her voice.
“Who cares what he calls us. It’s the Dragon Guardian we’re talking about here. The Dragon Guardian, Elpunt! Why would he write to us?”
"I don’t know. I guess we’ll just have to go to this meeting and see. I’m on my way.” Elpunt said, before a slight tingle in his head told Kelius the conversation was over.
