It's not that often I get totally sucked in by a game. Battle for Wesnoth is a perfectly balanced game. Once you get past the slightly clunky UI you are set for a very enjoyable game. I've been playing the "campaign mode" and it has been a compelling experience. The only reason I stopped is because I forgot to save and that set me back.. so remember to save before commencing each battle.
I am yet to try the multiplayer mode... as i know i will get owned. I'm not the best strategist. I hope you enjoy playing. It's my pick of the month :)

ARGH!
This game...
You know, I played the first campaign on the list, and it was pretty cool.
Then I played another one. Had nothing to do with anything. In fact I lost interest soon after. (From the screenshot, it looks like you are doing the same campaign I did.) It was too non-sequiter, had random heroes each campaign instead of developing a few set characters. AND it's kind of ambiguous for the sides and units. For example, there are so many ways you can level up a unit, you don't know what to do and how to make strong characters and forces. Also, how wide is the map again? Oh yes, infinite amount because there is no scale.
In a skirmish, I always get my butt kicked. It seems that the enemy's level 1 characters somehow beat all odds and wipe out my forces like it was nothing. AND I AM STANDING ON A MOUNTAIN!
Aside from the things that irk me, I did find this game pretty good. Except for that one song that sounds like "Hall of the Mountain King." Where the composer realized halfway through the song that he was copying "Hall of the Mountain King" and then tried "switching it up" but failed miserably. Other than that...
The game is pretty fun.
I would love to go 1 on 1 with someone in this game. (2 on 2? 4 on 4?) Make sure you do a campaign first though. :P
Really though. Who wants to do multiplayer?

Yes.. it's a confusing game to play and not easy to jump right in and know what the hell is happening.. or how to decide on a strategy. But persevering with it is worth it IMO.
It needs a fast forward/skip button so you don't need to watch the enemies move and have your screen scroll around violently.
I find the menus not that fun or intuitive to use.
The music bothers me so i have the sound off.
BUT,none of these things are deal breakers for me. It's still a solid game that maintains a nice challenge for me and i enjoy the decisions I have to make and feel my choices dictate the outcome. There is enough content in the single player game to keep you playing for quite some time as well.
And it's 100% free. So there isn't too much to complain about really.

Under the options you can set the unit move speed incredibly high. Up to x16. Also, you can disable AI moves so they go automatically without your screen moving. You won't be bothered but at the same time you don't see where they moved.
I prefer to keep the speed at x2 or x3 with AI moves on. :pirate deer: I dunno.

Aye. What Andre said.

I checked the site; from the description it looks like it's similar to Ogre Battle 64, plus multiplayer and level editor.
I enjoyed that game, so I'll give this one a try to see how it plays out - and thanks for the caveats! :)

Hmm. It's okay, I guess. It gets slightly repetitive though.
