View Full Version : Elona - the RPG of freedom

Recently I've got into playing Elona again, and I was wondering how many of you have played it before.
For those who haven't heard about it, Elona is a graphical roguelike RPG from Japan. It's similar to other roguelikes like Nethack/Dwarf Fortress, except it has pretty graphics (see screenshot below), and death is not permanent.

Cool features
From the top of my head, these are the coolest features of the game:
A wide variety of races and classes
Turn-based events and experience-based character advancement
Build your own home, furnish it with awesome items to get the highest rating (like Animal Crossing)
Own special buildings like farm, store, museum etc. and earn truckloads of money and fame.
Frequent and interesting monsters that can be captured with a Pokeball-like item;
Train captured monsters in the pet arena, let them fight in your party or let them take care of your buildings and stuff.
Fellow NPC adventurers to compete with; you can even marry one (or any creature in the game, even.)
Random events in towns, dungeons and while traveling on the world map;
Randomly-generated sidequests in towns;
Worship gods by sacrifice to gain special treasures, abilities and super-powered pets
Build and share custom levels online; chat with other players online
There is a lot more to it, but the list would be absurdly long if I were to list even only the stuff I've seen so far.
Download
If you want to give it a try, here is the link (http://homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/index_e.html) to the download page.

My green dragon pet is about to kill a red dragon in an arena fight. The red tried to flee, and now used his breath in his last desperate attempt, setting some spectators on fire. Hilarious!

The overworld map. My character is on the road between a mining town and his castle. Other buildings include my museum and storage houses, a couple of conquered dungeons and some unconquered ones.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p7/siamjai/eloscreen04.jpg
Inside the aforementioned museum. The figurines and cards are rare drops from monster and boss kills. The building can be decorated and even has its own customizable music!
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p7/siamjai/eloscreen05.jpg
Some random sidequests in a town. An easy way to gain fame and fortune if you pick the right sort of tasks.
Impressions
If I were to define the game in one sentence, it's all about unpredictability and total freedom. Although there is a storyline and main quest, it's completely optional and you can do pretty much whatever you want from the start. Then, almost every turn can bring in unexpected events that make the game feel fresh even after months of play.
A word of warning
The total freedom also implies that anything goes - I really mean anything, including stuff that's considered taboo in most civilized places. Cannibalism, slavery, prostitution, pedophilia, bestiality, abortion, torture, mass murder, genetic experiments, execution and such are all quite possible here. But it's all optional. It's entirely possible to play the game to the finish without encountering even one of the above, but you can, if you want to.
That's what I call freedom! :p

Wait wait wait what...How can it be a Roguelike if it doesnt kill you every second action you take (like spawning the first enemy with a wand of death...thats always good fun)? I thought that was the whole point of roguelikes O.O. Also is it really similiar to dwarf fortress? If it is I may be very inclined to get it...and possibly recreate BoatMurdered XD

I think you might like Elona - they really put the 'RP' back into RPG. ;)

Wait wait wait what...How can it be a Roguelike if it doesnt kill you every second action you take (like spawning the first enemy with a wand of death...thats always good fun)?
LOL, that sounds like an Elona story. :P I have a "blessed wand of summon monsters", which seems to have an equal chance of summoning a snail, a lich or a dragon, or anything in between. Somehow it tends to summon the least appropriate one for the situation. XD
Speaking of which... one day I studied a book of magic to get an interesting-sounding spell (chaos ball or something). A few turns passed reading the book, and then all of a sudden an epic monster and his friends appeared right in my face. That's how I found out the hard way about one of the side effects of reading a book that's way above my character's experience. So, if by any chance you find a book of Meteor, you might want to wait a while before you open it. ^_^
Also while we're on the subject, death is pretty much a random and frequent occurrence in Elona too - it's just not permanent. For example, my character died three times yesterday (all by visiting other people's custom levels, incidentally. :p)
Some of the deaths are rather hilarious. Like dying from getting hit by a "raw panty". XD Playing music badly in public is almost always instant death. I recall having my head exploded once from overcasting in the mage's guild.
And though not deadly, the random mutations caused by Etherwind (a kind of radioactive bad weather that can fall anytime) can be a source of interesting turns. Once I was out there too far from the nearest shelter, so by the time I made it back to town, I had four eyes! That pretty much killed my prostitute career, but made me a better performer, so I guess it was a good trade-off after all.
Ivernus
09-16-2009, 03:15 AM
Ah so long as 50% of your deaths are not your fault but rather the games random generator deciding to go against you (Such as polymorphing you into a creature with a melee attack JUST before you attack a cockatrice (which turns to stone anything that touches it)) then its enough of a roguelike for me =D. Think ill give it a go once the holidays roll round and im not failing uni again XD.
Also another good way for unexpected existance failures, using unidentified items, ESPECIALLY potions. I dunno why but whenever you forget to identify them the liquid is always lethal

This looks to be made in RPG maker 2000 or something. I will have to check it out. I don't know if it classifies as a rougelike.
HA! That's so true.
The point of the rougelike is that it is very difficult. Usually it goes like this...
You have a dungeon, you plunder said dungeon and you try to get as far as you possibly can but you die miserably before level 5. Net Hack is the classic example of a roguelike but I personally don't find it very fun.
Castle of the Winds pwns all rouge likes. (You get to go into a TOWN?! AMAZING!)
EDIT: So on downloading I found this to be more rougelike than what it looks. The controls are a little... difficult (What happened to the general "use" command?) but it seems fairly solid. Once you get used to it.
SiamJai
09-16-2009, 01:32 PM
Yeah, you're right: Elona is a bit more forgiving on the difficulty than most roguelikes (but not too easy still). I'm glad that you've still found it to your liking. :)
I think it's general consensus that the controls take bit of time to get used to, so it's not just you. ;) In the beginning I too have found myself typing "?" to find the right shortcut more frequently than I thought I should.
But yep, once you get the hang of it, it feels like second nature. I'm playing the game as I'm writing this. Spoiler (highlight): (Earlier today I captured a lvl.45 nether dragon - now I'm training it in the Pet Arena in Port Kapul. It just minced up a T-Rex! ^_^ )
I dunno why but whenever you forget to identify them the liquid is always lethal Ha! There must be some code that does this, as I've seen it too! I swear, that bottle of "clear liquid" must be set to turn into a cursed potion of mutation if you quaff it unID-ed. XD

Should be bigger, right? :) Like in Neverwinter Nights, those dragons are enormous! One could really feel a sense of appreciation for their massive strength and majesty. Elona leaves all that to the players' fantasy, I guess. ;)

You need to unzip the file. Windows XP and newer has this feature built into the operating system. Just double click on the icon and it will (should) open up a folder. If not, just right click on the file, go to "open with" and choose "Compressed Zip File" or something like that. Then click on "Extract all files."
Then once you have the Zip extracted, just go the to folder you extracted them to, open up the "Elona" folder and look for "elona.exe" and double click on that.

Sorry for the lack of reply; I just came back from abroad.
Actually,im tottaly lost, could you post how to install this,Siam?
Sure, Kitten. Let's see:
First, make sure that you've the latest stable version (As of this writing, it's Elona 1.16rfix2b. The download link is on the main page that I've linked to in the original post).
Check the size of the downloaded zip. On my harddrive, it's 26.7MB
Note that Elona has no "install" process per se. You simply unzip the archive with Winzip, Winrar, 7zip or your favorite extractor. The unzipped directory structure is then where the game runs from and saves to.
In the game's root directory, locate elona.exe (like this, no caps. It's one of the two apps that have a ball-inside-a-square icon). Double-click and run it.
That should do it. If you have done all that and the game still doesn't run, either your OS is not XP/Vista, or there is a problem that's beyond me. Then perhaps Elona wasn't meant for you to play, I guess. It's okay, it's just a game. :)
Craaapp. I can't get off my (little girl) mount. D:
Can someone helpie?
Dismount the same way that you mounted. Select the skill and then choose the target (in this case, yourself with your mount).
Edit: Also, when I exit my game and it saves, I go back. I go to the load screen, but no file was found. D:
That's a bummer! How did you exit the game? Keep in mind that unlike some other games, simply closing the app does not save your progress. Hitting Esc and choosing Exit will though, and your game is also saved in-game after certain actions, including sleep.
It's also possible that the save file was corrupted. Could you please check what's in your Save folder now?

Hmm a fun game ive played a couple of characters now and finnally got the hang of it got any tips for a newplayer?
Sure. Just highlight the stuff below if you don't mind minor spoilers. ;)
The stuff below are lifesavers and not too difficult to get:
Sleeping bag:
The lightest bed in the game; deploy it anywhere to get some sleep when away from home and inns.
Portable cooking tool:
There is plenty of free food to find outdoors (including carcasses from monsters you killed), but most of these rot rather quickly. If you have the cooking skill (and you should, it's quite important), and this cooking tool in your inventory, you can process raw food into longer-lasting, better stuff.
Fireproof and coldproof blankets:
Few things are as annoying as your valuable stuff getting destroyed by fire- and ice-breathing monsters, and they come at fairly low levels, so beware. If you see these two blankets at shops, buy them as soon as you can afford. These save your stuff from being burnt or frozen. Make sure you keep an eye on the charges though.
Cooler box:
You can get this handy storage box from the Puppy Cave quest in Vernis. It's a beginner-level quest and for a good reason. Any stuff you store in the cooler won't ever get rotten. Useful when you're out adventuring in dungeons, but I found this also handy to protect any valuable raw meat (eg. boss corpses) that were meant to be sacrificed to the gods.
Also, the aforementioned Puppy cave is a random dynamic dungeon, which means it generates lots of items. Scrolls of oracle appear fairly frequently; while they're useless to a beginner player, they sell for lots of money (2000+ per scroll).
If you find yourself outside in bad weather (heavy rain, Etherwind), run for the nearest inn. Talk with the innkeeper and choose 'take me to shelter'. Read the book or use the training machine to pass the time and gain some experience until the weather clears.
Speaking of which... these dates are important, remember them: first ten days of the months 3, 6, 9, 12. This is the time period when Etherwind is very likely to happen. It's a kind of radioactive rainstorm that can cause dangerous mutations to your character. Some of them worse than death. So, look at the calendar before planning a long trip into the middle of nowhere. ;)
Magic is nice to have, but when you're at low levels, reading spellbooks is very risky. If the book tends to be too difficult, you could either teleport randomly or worse yet, accidentally summon some high-level destructive monsters. So, for this reason, avoid reading books at home or in towns. If you must, read them in the wilderness, in your shelter, or in the arena (after winning).
With that said, definitely read scrolls of ally. They spawn a pet for you - if you're lucky, it could be a T-rex, the best ride in the game!
Keep any item that has a unique name, especially if the name is enclosed by {} (which means that it's 'miracle' or 'godly' item). These are rare, powerful and may provide useful either for you, your pets or for trading with NPCs.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, there is a bunch of other useful stuff; feel free to ask anything, or read the tips at the Elona wiki (http://elona.wikia.com/wiki/Tips). It has lots of spoilers though.
Good luck and have fun! :)
I started playing this again after I saw you could have pets and fight em and do LOTS of stuff apparently :P
Cool! Yeah, there is definitely lotsa things to do in Elona. I've been playing for months and still have lots of things I haven't done or seen yet. For example...
I've just discovered a bottomless pit of a dungeon swarming with monsters, the weakest of 'em is level50 and there is a bossfight at every fifth level down. OMGsomuchdeathandpwnage! :p
So, go for it! You might just get some neat surprises. ^_^

SiamJai
09-29-2009, 02:24 PM
Don't worry about it. :) Like in many roguelikes, death happens rather easily. Speaking of which: try to avoid your pets drinking from wells. There is a good chance that they might fall in and die. Or get pregnant and surprise you with hostile alien babies. Just saying.
What do you play as, and what do you do to level up?

SiamJai
09-30-2009, 01:14 AM
Awesome! You've got lucky... very lucky indeed! Those wishes come rarely. So, what you gonna do with all that money? :-)
Pets getting money from the wells is nice and happens a bit more frequently than wishes, but I still don't risk it, since the amount is not enough to offset the cost of resurrecting my pet if it happens to fall in and die.
(Btw, when you happen to come by another wish, I recommend wishing for 'seven-league boots' if you don't have them yet. These rare items make traveling a lot faster, so getting to faraway towns and completing traveling quests become a breeze. Or 'dungeon', so you can have your own dungeon. 'Castle' is a good wish too, the largest house you can own, comes with its own servants, if you don't mind the higher taxes.)

I don't like the magic system in this game.
You shouldn't "run out" of spells you know. That makes no sense. Mp, yes, but how do you unlearn a spell you just cast 300 times?
SiamJai
09-30-2009, 01:30 PM
Yeah, tell me about it. It's a major challenge to make a pure spellcaster for this reason alone. Early on one has keep hunting for books in the Puppy cave, dungeons and stores. It'll become easier later on when you join the Mage guild, but still the logic is faulty here.
I do play a spellcaster anyway, but I use 'learned' magic and wands alternately. Scrolls also help and you can carry as many as you want without a weight penalty. When the wands run out, I just recharge them or get new ones. I also have some potent melee weapons and enough skill to use them well if things get too close and personal. At least in Elona you can be a wizard that doesn't totally suck in fighting. ;)
Diablo 2 was guilty of a similarly illogical approach to casting, in that you could use a memorized spell only once, even though you had plenty of mana. Afterwards they somehow 'expired' in your memory until you rested to 'recharge' them. Not to mention that the character had a limited number of active spell slots as well. Oh well... the magic user's life is never easy, but the creativity and the power make up for it. :)
It works!!!!
That's great, Kitten! Glad it worked out. :) I hope you'll have fun with it. ^_^

The 'malicious hand' is a random bad event. Increasing your luck will make it occur less frequently, and there are a couple items that prevent thieves from stealing anything from you. If you follow the main quest, you are guaranteed to get one, and there is another one that doesn't require the main quest.
As for food, there is plenty of the free variety. (bash fruit trees, eat plants/herbs in the wild, eat the display food in bakeries etc.) Getting fed at the inn saves time but is only recommended if you have a steady income.
An easy way to get money is by completing sidequests offered on the town board. You can also prostitute yourself to anyone who's getting drunk. If your charisma is high enough, it's easy money early on. If you worry about karma loss, tie the two strategies together to negate it.
Almost any junk that's laying around can be sold for money. If you have the performer skill, play any available instrument in public and passersby will give you money and items if they like your performance. (Or harm and kill you if they don't.)
I got bored of Elona after pwning it on wizard mode :[

Strange, but erm... okay. :) To me, Elona is a free-for-all 'make your own story' type of game, so I can kinda see why someone who is used to following pre-made stories finds it difficult to enjoy. I hope that you'll find games better suited for your playstyle. ;)

Glad to see another Elona-fan! :) Thanks for sharing those tips. Yep, I've heard that fairies make good characters. What's your profession? The ones I've heard of are either mages or thieves.
Negotiation is a pretty useful skill, saves quite a lot of money. Though I've had bad experience with 'Before its too late'; the client died just one square away from the town I supposed to take him to. Shucks. I prefer Hunting and Panic! quests, those suit my character better. I've also just started getting into Performer quests too, since my skill got high enough to do them without getting killed. Each gig brings in huge amounts of money rather easily (just like in real life, I guess).
On those quests, like the delivery ones, they say to deliver it to their brother. But I dunno what 'brother' they are talking about. xD Are those the "Small token" quests? I think that each quest mentions the name of the person and town, but I'm not sure, I don't have that on the message board right now.
There are a couple things you can try to find the target person once you're in town; the guards will mention his/her location if you talk with them. Also, you'll see a square icon above the quest character's head. This works even if they happen to be sleeping. Good luck! :)
Btw. a question to everyone playing: what's the alias of your character? Some people ended up with hilarious combinations like "Homo Menace" "Husband Mustache" "Steel Gay" "Druid Sex" "Flaming Moron" etc.

Hehe im Natural Wolf I had to reroll like 10 times to get it though That's really cool, I like it! :) Yeah, I rerolled mine many times too until I got a good one. I'm thinking about starting a new character just to see the hilarious combinations the game can come up with.
Also maybe you guys know this already, but there is a Vote box in many towns - if you're connected to the internet, you can submit your alias and see and vote for other players names too. It resets every month, so this would be a good time to put your name on the ballot. If I see any of your names, I'll vote for the first one I see. ;)
By the way, I've just got a new foodsource: human flesh! I've got a mutation that makes my character crave for it, even to the point that it gets disappointed if the current meal is not human. Very handy in dungeons where normally we have to leave the carcasses of humanoid enemies behind. So now I can eat anything from 'rotten corpse of little girl' to 'roast wizard of Elea'. Yummy!
Sounds like the ideal feat for the great Cthulhu. :p

The love potion thing that YniYni mentioned works. Also, make sure that your pet has the finishing blow on some enemies; you know you did it right when a heart sign appears above its head.
Try to avoid your pet taking any collateral damage (grenades, molotov bombs, any type of fire caused by you), because that also takes its affection down every time it hits your pet.
Another thing you can do is give your pet some engagement amulets and rings (but make sure that they have some good, useful effects too, as the pet will keep them forever, taking up space in its inventory.)
If things get bad and it's likely that your pet is going to die, talk to it and send it 'back to town'. It will disappear from battle, saving you from losing big money and affection points. When you're fine again, go to any town, talk to the innkeeper and the pet will be yours again for 100 gold. This is not the same as resurrection, which usually costs a lot more money and the pet will hate you.

Make sure you have enough platinum coins, and then talk to the trainer in Vernis to learn it. Or in Yowyn, if you happen to be closer.

It's 100 gold to resurrect a pet? I've only been paying 15.
Also, on my main account I became a criminal from too much prostitution, and too much failing missions. So now I can't enter towns to get potions or food, and I can't survive long enough to get to derphy, so I had to create a new character. Which actually ended up with a much better name, "The end." and I've gotten much better luck.
I just found out you have the ability to pick other races: http://elona.wikia.com/wiki/Races

Really? I guess the price depends on the type and level of your pet then. I got this dragon from a lucky Domination spell a long time ago and they charge me 100 as long as I can remember. Having a poor negotiation skill probably doesn't help either. XD
Glad you got a luckier start this time. :)

I figured it out. I've been paying 15 to resurrect the pet from death, but it still costs 100 to bring her back when I tell her to wait at the town, although it still may have some other factors.
The luck got better, I've gotten like 7 spells from dreams, and one of them is the most powerful healing spell I could find on the wiki, Cure of Jua. Although I probably won't be able to cast it for a long time.

Ha! There must be some code that does this, as I've seen it too! I swear, that bottle of "clear liquid" must be set to turn into a cursed potion of mutation if you quaff it unID-ed. XD
Ive been poking around this thread a bit and i noticed this. All the bottles of clear liquid that look like bottle not potions are explosives or alcohol.... i think i have only ever drank an unknown potion once and i was lucky enough to have it save me it was a blessed potion of cure critical wound!:D

Oh okay, I see. So it'd actually be more cost-effective for you to resurrect the pet instead of sending it to town, but I'm not sure it'd be worth the affection rate drop.

So you got one of those 'teaser' spells too. :) Hope you gonna get to a point when it becomes usable, and not stuck with it forever, like me with this Meteor spell that I've got through a dream. I've got the standard 200 stocks, but it requires 226 to even have a single chance of casting it, so yeah.

Interesting! Yeah, the bottle-looking icons are usually molotovs and beer. Just for the heck of it, I tried to drink a molotov now, thinking it will be instant explosion or something, but no. It just sets you on fire. But since I have superb fire resistance through the Gloves of Vesda and other equipment, it didn't really do anything. Cool! :)

THIS IS A COOL GAME ALREADY.
Lol, I really like the arenas. Btw, what the heck is debug? o.o
SiamJai
12-26-2009, 04:27 AM
It's wizard mode (cheat stuff) and be careful with it. Don't save with debug mode on, unless you know what you're doing. It will mark your savefile as a cheat, so you cannot do some stuff that you can in normal mode. And it's not removable afterwards.
I forgot what the exact limitations are, I'll look it up.
Edit: Here it is: the debug mode explained on the Elona wiki (http://elona.wikia.com/wiki/Wizard_mode). Basically, you'll lose your alias and can no longer do gene transfer, meaning you cannot continue with an heir. The pros and cons and commands are explained on that page. :)

Wow...took me a day just to figure out the controls. The learning curve is steep but after that its a pretty sweet game. Anyone knows if the impress of the npc affects your interaction with them? For some reason it dropped from normal down to annoying and I didn't even do anything...
SiamJai
01-28-2010, 07:13 AM
Yeah, it's a bit tough at the beginning, but awesome once you know the basics. :) Glad you like it too! :-)
By NPC, you mean your pet? Their affection level drops a little bit every time they get hurt by your actions (for example, if they step into a fire you started), and it drops a lot more if they die. If their affection level turns too low (hatred), they will behave somewhat... differently. ;)
As for regular non-pet NPCs, their levels might drop if you attack them or try to give them poison/love potion and stuff like that, but not sure how it could happen otherwise. Also, fellow adventurers will turn hostile and attack you on sight if their affection towards you hits rock-bottom.
By the way, there is a Christmas edition of Elona out, with some new features, new enemies, new creatures and a way to increase your house to have multiple levels! I've yet to explore it all, but it looks like a fun upgrade.

I don't have any problem raising my pet's impression it's just that other npcs like the shopkeepers drop for no reason at all...it would be a pain if I couldn't talk to them anymore to complete any jobs or if I have to give every single one of them "a little tail t'night" and get sick.
SiamJai

Shopkeepers? That's strange, I've never seen it drop by more than a few points, usually from random conversations.
I know for sure that increasing their affection level does not affect shopkeeper behavior (at least in this version), so I'd assume that decreasing it would have no such effect either.

Er, Siam.. xD Sorry to ask this again, since you didn't answer it, how do you enable debug races?

go into the elona folder then pick config then find "extraRace. "0" 0=official races 1=debug races" and set that "0" to 1

I got:
Married to pet girl ---> When I'm sleepy, I select option make a gene ---> Little girl blushes.
Is that supposed to happen?

Okay, so I screwed around custom npc and stuff. Then I went to a dungeon to see pictures of younger brothers. When I attack them..

Yes, they always blush when you ask that. Watch the dream sequence. There will be an additional screen about you 'making a gene' with the little girl.
About the custom NPC, it looks like the profile pic and the sprite has been switched. I don't know much about custom NPC creation, so no idea how that could've happened - sorry! :)
