This one is pretty late, but instead of just waiting for your island to be deleted for inactivity, how about either a:
A New Game button, which will delete your file, or
an Options button with the option to Delete File.
They are both very similar, though.

That annoys me to. That it dies after a week. Sure maybe that means that you beat and you are done with it, but what if the owner had to go on a trip/camping and couldn't get to a computer? I like Bunni's ideas. Personally I like the Option idea better, but that's just me.

They delete? I just checked mine that I haven't played since last year and it is still there.

They don't really delete it, it was only a thing that they were going to do if they started running out of space.

I seem to remember a discussion like this a while ago - one suggestion was that members need to make x number of posts before being able to create their own threads. Is that possible?

Now, now, why would you do that? Freedom of speech should be available to everyone, equally.
You, my good sir/lady, are charged with crimes against humanity for suggesting such a thing!

Actually it would make my life so much easier as a moderator if that could be possible. But alas we couldn't do that simply because people with genuine questions about the game need to be able to ask them, and thus need to make threads without first having x amount of posts.
