Hey all, during exam-block I can up with an Idea for a Forum game and since I'm no longer failing my exams, I figure i'll post up what I have so far

The Labyrinth Forum Game

Rules for the Game

The Basic Idea

The primary Role of the Labyrinth game is to explore the Labyrinth, searching for treasure while avoiding monsters and traps. The winner is the person, who at the end of the game has the most treasure AND can make it back to the entrance.

Starting the game
The game starts with everyone beginning at the entrance Square. This is the square that leads out of the labyrinth and back into town. At the start of the game, everyone starts out with the same stats and the same amount of starting gold, which may vary between games. The labyrinth will also be randomized at this point, the entire floor-plan, traps, monsters and treasures now in place and waiting for the adventurers to find them.

Playing the game

The game length will be decided at the start as well in number of turns, and once this number has elapsed, the game is declared over and the winner determined. During the course of the game, each player will take turns exploring the labyrinth and it will be done either on a pre-determined basis or a first come first serve. On a turn a player is permitted to move into one unexplored part of the labyrinth or can move through two already discovered parts. Being the first person to move into an uncharted square will gain you the right to any treasures in there but be warned, if you discover a monster you will be forced to either negotiate your way out or fight them.

Treasures

As stated, the goal of Labyrinth is to find as many treasures as possible so at the end of the game you can be declared the winner. While treasures can be found in the labyrinth, there are other ways to gain or lose treasure as well. There are action cards which you can use to steal treasures from others and treasure can be lost either by buying items to aid you in searching for more treasure or lost upon your death.

Monsters

The Labyrinth is a set of ancient ruins, which many a monster has now taken up as its home. Having an adventurer like yourself walk in is bound to work these creatures into a blood craze. When a monster is encountered, a player is presented with three options. They can try to talk the creature out of attacking, a free action with relatively low odds of success to not have to fight the creature. They can attempt to bribe the creature also, this normally comes at the cost of treasure but greatly increases the odd of not having the creature attack. Also each creature will have a favourite treasure, using this will grant a 100% chance of not having to fight the creature. If a player fails either of these options, or opts not to try them, they will instead be forced to fight the creature.

Bribing / Persuading

If a player manages to successfully bribe a creature, this creature, unless stated otherwise, will allow that player to pass by it unhindered but will not allow other players to pass. A creature that has been previously bribed cannot be bribed by another player unless using their favourite treasure. A bribed creature can still be talked to though. If a player successfully persuades a creature, they are allowed to pass by it once. If they wish to get back, they will have to either convince the creature again or slay it.
If you are unsuccessful in bribing/persuading the creature, you will be forced to fight it, with it getting the first attack.

Battling

Through the normal course of play, the players will only be battling the hostile creatures within the Labyrinth, although actions cards can allow them to fight among each other. When a player battles a creature, both they and the creature will have three rounds of attack. These rounds of attack are based upon the stats of the player and the creature and if both the creature and the player remain standing at the end of the three rounds, the turn still ends and the player can choose to continue fighting or break off. If a creature is not slain, either through the battle not ending or the player being defeated, then the square can be entered but it cannot be walked through until it is slain or bribed.

Traps

As mentioned above, the Labyrinth is full of both ancient traps and recent ones, all deadly and sinister in design. When a player enters a square with a trap, they are informed but no one else is, so a trap remains a surprise to the others. Traps can range from plain old damage traps to ones that make you waste a go or traps that cause your statistics to drop. The most dangerous kind of traps are cave-ins. These will only trigger as a player walks pass a point at which point the room collapses, shutting off the entrance they came through. Not only do these damage the player but if they do not find a non-blocked path back to the entrance when the game ends, they are declared lost in the labyrinth forever. Some traps can also be placed through action cards by players

Action Cards (Abilities)

Action cards are used to represent special abilities a player can take during their turn. At the start of the game, each player is given 4 random action cards and more can be gotten from events in the labyrinth. Up to two action cards can be used per turn by a player. These actions cards can do a variety of things so it is best to read each card individually to understand what it allows you to do.

Death

When a player dies within the Labyrinth, unless otherwise stated at the game start, they are allowed to continue their adventure at a price. Any items they were carrying will have dropped at their corpse as will half of their treasure while they are sent back to the start and back to level 0. Any player who reaches this fallen loot can claim it for themselves so long as they reach it first. Note if there is a monster which had slain the player, the monster must be killed first.

Shops

There are two types of shops within the game. The first one is at the town which is reached by the starting square. The town shop sells basic items which can be of use when starting the game off. However, hidden within the labyrinth is a travelling salesman who can offer unique one of a kind items as well as other items far superior to that of the town shop. Of course he demands much more for these items but quality has its price. You pay for items by using the treasure you have found in the labyrinth. These items are not counted towards your end game score so make sure if you buy them you put them to good use.

End Game

Once everyone has had their last turn the game is not yet over. After the elapsed time the Labyrinth will begin to collapse, resulting in all players needed to evacuate lest they become trapped in the Labyrinth forever! At this point, each player must choose their path back to the starting square, not being allowed to pass through any unexplored squares and not knowing where any of the traps are. If you have been blocked off by a cave-in and have not found a path that connects back up with the starting square, you will not be able to escape the labyrinth and are declared lost forever. If on your path back, you pass through too many traps and are slain, you are also declared lost forever. The winner is the player with the most treasure who manages to return to the town, those lost forever are disqualified from winning.

In terms of how this play for the thread, if you do want to join in a round, simply post in this thread and let me know, possibly with 4-8 players in each round. When you take your go, you can either PM me or post in this thread what you will be doing for your turn, I will then inform you if you need to make any additional choices (such as walking into a monster and deciding if you want to fight, etc.). I am thinking of giving players at max 24 hours (this can be changed if everyone wants it to) for a turn, if you haven't made your move by then, you stand still doing nothing for that turn. If everyone makes there move sooner, we will go on to the next turn quicker. After everyone has had their turn, I will post a map showing everyones positions, just so everyone can see what is happening. I may include information on what everyone did/had happen but that will be up to the players to decide.

If anyone has any feedback, suggestions or questions please do share them as I would like to have peoples input in this before it starts.
And if you actually read all of this, thanks for your patience.

Should be fun if we can get enough people ^^

Sounds confusing, but I'd like to try it.

Well, if anyone has any questions, just post them up and they will be answered. ^^ I'm gonna play this, coz I'm interested to see how Nick does this XD

But basically it's just a treasure hunting game. I would say it's kind of like a board game style, you take a turn to move in a direction, searching for treasure in a labyrinth (or a maze if you will). Along the way you encounter monsters, which you can bribe, negotiate with, or fight. The object is to gain the most treasure you can and get back to the start before the end of the game. If you die you respawn at the start and lose some treasure (not sure how much, I forget) XD But you can get it back if you get back to your corpse, or other people can also get it if they want to. And yea, you also have cards you can use to help you, and there are traps that may hinder or help you as well. Hopefully enough people will want to play. We have 2 so far, if anyone else is thinking about it I implore you to try it.

The maps will be premade (Nick will be doing this) all the monsters, traps, cards, stats and items are all premade, and will be random for each person. It's a lot deeper than it looks, so hopefully some more people will join and we can start a game ^^

Also I think Nick said, when people get the feel for the game (after a few games) he may change it so the winner gets to come up with a labyrinth for everyone else if they want.

Looks like lots of thought has gone into this boardgame to make it interesting and fun. Count me in! :-)

I wonder about the AI - how is it decided what a monster's reaction will be to my actions? I.e. if I choose to talk to or bargain with a creature, what determines its reaction? Also, will there be any clues about the creature before having to deal with it (e.g. appearance, sounds etc)?

On the matter of traps, is there a chance of evasion/deactivation, or do they automatically damage the player upon entrance? What happens after a trap sets off, is it still 'unset' for the other players, or does it become harmless?

I agree with the 24-hour turns; these kind of games are best when they're going at a steady pace. Hope to see more players joining in! :)

@Kittens, Yeah it probably does seem abit confusing but im hoping thats only because Im showing rules for everything at once, hopefully once we start playing it will seem simpler.

@Saimjai, well I'm going to keep the AI simplistic, which means its all based on random chance. I have a nifty program that lets me simulate all kinds of dice-rolls and other random chance events which i'll be using for this. So whether or not a monster decides to listen to you if you decide to talk to it will depend on some chance (bribing it increases the chances dramatically). As for the stats, I do have a beastiary of about 32 Monsters ready and I will show these before we start (I'll pick some out for each game). I think I'll also include some brief descriptions and some flavor text is I can think of some XD.

As for traps, normally you trigger a trap there is no chance to evade but the damage does have a small range so it may be minimal. There may however be items or abilities that can allow for trap evasion hidden within the labyrinth (I will have a full ability list but not a full secret treasure list, to keep them secret). As for resetting traps, some won't reset while others will, and when someone triggers a trap only they are told so others may still fall victim to it.

And yeah I think keeping it 24 hours a turn to start and maybe as people get quicker with their turns we can maybe reduce it.

Anyway thanks for the feedback so far both of you, if we get 1 or 2 more we can probably give this a try

Well its been awhile since anyone elseh as posted so it may be safe to assume other people are maybe uninterested/busy/something else. Did you three (Kittens/Saim/Screw) just want to have a go at it with only 3 players? It should hopefully still be fun

Ivernus
07-03-2010, 05:20 AM
Mmm yeah been abit slow here but I've been delaying this next part since I've realised I need to make the game a tiny bit more complicated with all the stats I'll need to incoporate. I've tried to simplify it as much as I can and hopefully balance it out well but we'll just have to see:

Each player will control an adventurer (I did plan to have multiple classes but it proved a hassle to balance sorry)
There are 6 Stats:
Hp (Health): Represents your current health, if it reaches 0 you are dead.

Attack: Represents your attack power, is done in the form of a dice roll (Similar to DnD system).
Elaboration:

An attack roll takes the form of 'xDy + z' can be broken into 2 parts, a 'xDy' and a 'z'. The xDy represents 'x' rolls of a 'y' dice (so 1d6 would be like rolling a 6 sided dice). The z is just an additive multiplier. So for a full example, an attack of 1d6+2 means your damage can be between 3-8

Defence: Represents your current defence level. Reduces attacks by dice roll amount (the same methods as attacks do), but all attacks will deal at least 1 damage.

Energy: Represents your energy levels. It works similiar to magic for your abilities but can be drained through other means. Energy returns at the end of each turn based on your level.

Inventory Limit: Represents how much you can carry. Each item will take up one space in your inventory (This includes treasure!) and if your inventory is full you have to either drop an item or leave anything you find behind. In town there is a stash where you can place anything you find, so if your full on treasure it may be worthwild heading back and stashing it in town for safe-keeping. (Treasure in a stash cannot be lost through ANY means, even death)

Experience: Used to indicate how close you are to the next level. Each level up will give you more stats and another ability to use, but upon death all levels are reset so be careful.

The starting stats:
HP: 15 (+3 for a level up)
Attack: 1-1 (+1 for 3 levels up)
Defence: 0 (+1 for 3 Levels up)
Energy: 10 (+2 for a level up)
Exp: 0 (need 200+50*current-level for a level up)
Inventory Limit: 10 (+1 for a level up, each item will take 1 space UNLESS stated otherwise)

You also start with 100 Silver coins. These coins can be used to buy items at the town or can be hoarded, but their value is halfed for end-game calculations, so their best use is the store.

Which brings me to the next part (Yes there is more walls of text!), the Shops. Before we start this adventure, It may be worthwild buying some equipment as fighting bare-handed can normally lead to an early demise. There are a couple of shops in town each one offering different items. If you want any explained ask =D.

Black Smith Provides armour and weapons that mainly boost attack and defence.

Traing Grounds Allows one to aquire additional abilities

Random Action Card, Gives a Random Action Card, Costs 40 Gold/Silver/Treasure

Anyway, there only thing left for me to do is randomize the dungeon layout and choose which monsters I will use and provide the information on them for you all and it should be ready. I do hope these walls of texts arent scaring people away XD. So if people want to pick out their starting equipment now to save a bit of time, feel free to.

Sorry for the delay here, finally got some days off working so I decided to get away from the computer for a few days.
For the monster list I've created a few sets of monsters, I think using 1 per game will be sufficient but if you want more just say so.
For refernce
Monster Name(Health, Armor, Damage, Special Abilities), Favourite Treasure
Goblin (6, 0, 1-3), Goblet
Hob-goblin (7, 1, 1-3), Crown
Ork (12, 0, 2-2), Chests
Goblin Shaman (6, 2, 1-4, Exhaustion), Sapphire
Ork Shaman (8, 2, 2-4, Cursed), Diamond
Troll (15, 0, 2-3, Regeneration), Emerald
Ogre (20, -1, 4-6), Ruby
Green Dragon (30, 3, 4-8, Cursed, Exhaustion, Poison, Corruption)
As a note, the Green Dragon is an Epic Monster. Slaying it will reward you with massive amounts of treasure, but it Cannot be bribed and is incredibly powerful.

Also for reference for the special Abilities that apply:
Poison (status effect): Loses 1 Hp each action
Cursed (status effect): : All damage done is halved (rounded up)
Corruption (status effect): : Lose 2 Armour Points (Can go negative)
Exhaustion (status effect): : Lose 1 Energy each action
Regeneration (passive): Gain 2 health per turn

With status effects, when attacked by a creature there is a 10-50% chance of being inflicted with the status effect (The higher the damage, the higher the chance of being inflicted with a status effect). Once inflicted, there is a 10% chance to remove the status effect after the first turn, which increases by 5% each successive turn.

I think with that, its almost ready to start, took ALOT longer than I thought it would to get this started o.o

I've sent you a PM with my inventory list. Time to loot! :-p

Ivernus

Alright we have enough people for this game now, So i'll start it off later today once I get some things out of the way. Once I've posted up the start, you have 24 Hours to PM/Post your turn to me, and if necessary I'll reply to you letting you know what you've found and if you can do anything with it. Once everyones turn is complete, I'll post up the updated positions of everyone and this will continue till we run out of turns.

If you have any questions now is a good time to ask

Ivernus
07-23-2010, 12:58 AM
Alright, sorry for the delay but ScrewbaII decided she wanted to do up some quick pictures for the game and I decided I may as well wait for them. As it stands we are now ready to begin, and I just need you all to do one last thing. Pick a colour that I can use to represent you on the map. You can't pick black or white since the map has mainly been done in those colours.

Anyway here is the layout of the map so far (There are a few discovered squares just so we can get going a bit quicker)
http://bunnibunni.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1308&stc=1&d=1279846299
(To explain the map, that centre square is the back to town square, the rest of them are open paths EXCEPT the far right one, which is blocked by rubble, as other features come up on the map I will explain them)

And for this first turn, you can move twice in one turn (once again to get everyone into the Labyrinth quicker). I'll be running the random generator to determine some of the random events (such as which action cards you recieve) and also turn order in a little bit.

Also is everyone happy with a 20 turn game to start with? We can length/shorten depending on how you find the game XD

screwbaII
07-23-2010, 01:03 AM
I pick yellow :D

I am also happy with the 20 turns.

Also hope you guys like the squares, it's not great but it's something XD Nick told me what to do

Inventory:
Long sword
Cloak
Light armor
Potion

GRAY. D:<

Ivernus
07-23-2010, 08:44 AM
Mmmm just one problem lovelight :(, that is more than the 100 coins you start with!

http://bunnibunni.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11843&page=2
(3rd post down or my first one has the items you can buy and the prices)

That said i'll give you time to fix it up, as its unlikely you'll encounter a monster on the first turn :P.

Anyway, so far we have:
Screw: Yellow
Siamjai: Blue.
Kittens: Green
Xaoz: Bla-I mean Purple :P
Love (just need to fix that inventory issue XD): Gray

As for turn order, I've run some dice rolls for you all and heres the results (dice were 20 sided, highest goes first)

Screw: 15
Siamjai: 16
Kittens: 12
Xaoz: 6
Love: 2

So turn order will be Siamjai, Screw, Kittens, Xaoz, Love (atleast to start with, it could change over the course of the game due to events :P). I'll also PM each of you with your starting 'abilities' once I assign them, and you can take turns when your ready (either post or pm me)

Edit: For clarification, you can all post your goes, I'll just resolve them in the turn order, so don't feel you need to wait for the person infront of you to post

SiamJai
07-24-2010, 01:44 AM
Oh, no red please - in this country I could get in trouble for that, hehe. Blue would be fine though. ;)

Anyway the Labyrinth Forum Game is pretty much ready to start just..need things to calm down abit before I get it started so we can actually go at a smooth pace. Sorry to all of you who actually want to play. I should be good to go by the weekend barring any unforseen circumstances>

Hmm... yep, I got some interesting abilities, but I can imagine how they'd backfire if not used properly. Either way, the game will be more fun, haha.

Screw, let me guess: you could charm all within one square for one turn, and you wanted to make other players give their treasures to you... and now you can charm only NPCs, lol. Is it anything close? :-p

screwbaII
08-02-2010, 09:46 AM
Not even close :p

Try something along the lines of imba teleportation devices.... THAT NOW DIE IF YOU DO >=( Warning Nick makes up the rules as he goes along, so expect to be told "no you can't do that". My thing said nothing about dieing after I died if it was activated prior to death, until I asked 'can I do this' and he's like NO >=(. Well actually he was more like "you do realise..." so yea, now I actually have to use it properly :(

I bet he complains about me being mean.

>.>, I had to type those up at work, needless to say I did not include full descriptions of anything that would obviously be broken. As it stands I am hoping you will all come up with very creative ways to use your abilities, and so long as they aren't gamebreaking I will let them slide. Hell I didn't even disallow Screw's idea I just explained to her the one restriction that makes it require planning =D

Well anyway, to anyone who thinks it looks like we're fighting, we're really only joking around. The only time we actually fight is when we play HoN in the same room, and one of us makes the other die by accident or otherwise. It's pathetic how the only fights we have are over a stupid game lol.

btw are abilities a one time use only? or can they be used as much as we want?

Ivernus

Unless otherwise stated, 1 time use only

Alright we are probably ready to begin then, if people want to post/send me there turns when they're ready? For the start I'll be abit slack with the time limit on the turns, just so everyone can get a feel of how the turns will work. And remember you don't need to wait for the person infront of you if you don't want to, I'll just resolve the turns in that order

Cool!

Nick, I've sent you a PM about my actions. Just to recap: we have two moves in this first turn, and the treasurehunt lasts for 20 turns, right?

Good luck, everyone! ^_^

Ivernus

Yep thats correct, two moves for the first turn or when your moving through already explored places, only one if its an unexlpored square. 20 Turns total, Good luck all. If you have any questions throughout the game feel free to ask

Alright just waiting on a final decision from Lovelight and then we are ready to move to turn two. As I may have mentioned this first run was to sort of be a test run of the game, and as such I've added in a few extra things which I feel I may need to explain

Gold in the Inventory: Gold will take up places in your inventory, however you can hold up to 500 pieces of gold in a single place in your inventory, so this should only become a problem later in the game.

Artifacts: There are more than just treasures, gold, traps and monsters in the Labyrinth. Special items, referred to as Artifacts, are unique one of a kind items that have a treasure value of 0 and can be one of three things. They may be cursed items, and upon picking them up, or performing an action with them, a terrible curse or event may befall you. They may be blessed items, which function the same as cursed items except the event is benefical. Alternatively, they may be an item that someone has lost in the Labyrinth and returning it to them will net you a reward. There is no way to tell what an Artifact is by simply looking at it, you can only take the risk and see what it does.

And remember if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Should have the map updated and turn two started sometime tomorrow hopefully

Oh man, now we're entering 'roguelike' territory. XD "Identify", please! ;)

Speaking of gold made me wonder about the various currencies of the game. So far we have Silver (we started out with 100), gold, and treasure. What's the conversion rate between these, if any? :)

I think they may all be the same o.o

Alrighty - thanks Screw. :)

Another Q then... when we count the final amount at the end, do the silver and gold get tallied up, like treasure?

Ivernus
08-09-2010, 12:50 AM
That they do, I'll break everything down to its gold value and tally it that way (save from equipment you've used). Also all the turns are done, so I'll update the map when I get home from work today

Alrrigghtt, Turn one has gone by, so time for a map update. Unsurpisingly no one went in the same direction as anyone else...so my job was made very difficult in updating the map. I hope your all happy

http://bunnibunni.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1320&stc=1&d=1281345569

Yes, you are all circles, why? Cause I'm a horrible artist and I haven't asked screw to draw character designs yet. So until further notice you are all blobs of colour. Also if you check the map you may notice a new feature on it. Specifically the giant cobwebs. Due to an event these webs have appeared and it will now take a whole turn to clear those webs. So I hope no one wanted to use that pathway.

Anyway, you can start making moves for turn two now, but remember, only 1 move into unexplored territory.

Hopefully those spider webs wont be a huge pain in the end X.X
and yes Iver, we are very happy :D
But we tail love you :3
(sorta)

Ill take one move to the west

Also, how many inventory slots do we get?

Ivernus
08-10-2010, 02:24 AM
Probs be some delays in this for a few days, I have a game assignment I need to work on, can't contact my group so I'm seeing if i can just do it solo -.-. Also have another group assignment I need to start, but thankfully my group for that one seems cool.

Anyway to answer the questions
PoohBomber: Its...sorta like it i guess, most of the ideas were inspired from the DnD system so, its familiar yet different I guess

Xaoz: I believe on the second or third page I stated how many you start with, I believe it was 10. Each item takes up 1 slot unless otherwise stated and gold takes up 1 space per 500 gold. You can head back to town though and 'stash' you stuff there, freeing up room in your inventory.

its fine, lifes are more important :3
A game assignment? sounds fun ;D

and yeah you did, but i forgot @.@

Ivernus
08-10-2010, 02:49 AM
Mmmm, yeah the game assignment SHOULD be fun but due to not having a group...Uggh its becoming a hassle. I may actually have to end up using this game for my project, mainly because I've got some much of it already developed =D, meaning its a lot easier to do. Anyway I may be able to do some of the moves tonight but yeah, probs won't be able to do a map update till thursday, so no rush on your moves.

I'll go one east :D Nick stop being slack and hurry up and update this.
