You never read the book. 1984 was a book written by George Orwell that described a terrible place of existence where everyone is watched and controlled by cameras. You can't go anywhere where there is not a camera. If you do any sort of illegal activity you would be caught immediately. It's moving and scary because humans are getting to the point where this type of technology might actually exist.

It's where "Big Brother is Watching You" comes from.
