Not sure where you're from, but polygamy isn't a widely endorsed notion, especially in Western cultures (and since this game was produced by Americans and Australians ... yea) especially in children type games. So no, two wives are not better than one, even if Peach's dance is questionable in terms of morality. Besides you have no control over the characters so keeping them off islands would be pretty hard to do.
